Flora B. Schaffner

Flora Belle (Davis) Schaffner, age 103, of Highland, IL., died Wednesday, January 28, 2009, at Highland Health Care Center in Highland, IL.

She was born June 5, 1905, in Greenville, IL., the daughter of James and Calista (Ellsworth) Davis.

On June 4, 1938, she married Elder R. Schaffner died 5/14/1963, who passed away May 14, 1963.

Flora was born in Greenville, the last of eight children. She graduated from Greenville High School in 1923; received a BS in Education from Greenville College in 1963. She had taught at Pin Oak School near Greenville; then 6th grade at Ingles School in Greenville from 1925-1938. Following her marriage she moved to Highland and raised her family. She started teaching again in 1962 at New Douglas; Alhambra; and Grantfork, finally teaching in Highland in 1967. She retired from Highland Community Schools after 26 years in 1972. In her retirement she volunteered at St. Joseph Hospital, tutoring in reading past the age of 91. She moved into Highland Home in January 1993, and into the Nursing Home in April 2008. Her hobbies included reading, crocheting afghens, walking, playing cards, and painting with oils.

She was a member of Evangelical United Church of Christ-Highland, IL since 1938.

She was also a member of Retired Teachers Assoc.;Past Pres. Evening Women's Guild; Past Pres. Day Women's Guild;
JOY Singers; Girl Scout Leader; Daughter's of the Am. Revolution-Silver Creek Chapter; Weinheimer Senior Citizens; Ladies Aux. St. Joseph Hospital; Retired Teachers Assoc.;Meals on Wheels Driver; Order of Eastern Star-Highland Chapter #524; 50 yr member &Past Worthy Matron 1956; Real Daughters of Am. Union Civil War Veterans.

Survivors include Son-James A. "Yogi" (Heather "Happy") Schaffner of Niwot, Colo., Daughter-Ruth Ann (Richard) Mather of Beckley, W. Va., Grandchild-Alan Mather of Pfafftown, N.C., Grandchild-Amy Mather of Omaha, NE, Grandchild-Donald (Lauren) Mather of Waxhaw, N.C., Grandchild-Carly Schaffner of New York, N.Y., Grandchild-Dash Schaffner of Boulder, Colo., G-Grandchild-Christopher Mather of Pfafftown, N.C., G-Grandchild-Jacob Mather of Pfafftown, N.C., G-Grandchild-Jessica Mather of Pfafftown, N.C., Nieces & Nephews-Many ., Gr Nieces & Nephews-Many ., Cousins-Many .

She was preceeded in death by Father-James D. Davis, Mother-Calista --- Davis nee Ellsworth, Husband-Elder R. Schaffner died 5/14/1963, Brother-Ralph Davis died 1976, Brother-Orey Davis died 1965, Sister-Mary Byxbe died 1973, Sister-Wava Merry died 1999, Sister-Bertha Altom died 1999.

Service Information

Arrangements are being handled by Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, Ill.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM Friday, January 30, 2009, at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, IL, and from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM Saturday, January 31, 2009. , at Evangelical United Church of Christ

Funeral service will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 31, 2009, at Evangelical United Church of Christ in Highland,., with Rev. Christopher W. Hill, Pastor, Evangelical United Church of Christ, Highland, Illinois, officiating.

Interment will be at Highland City Cemetery in Highland, Ill.

Memorial contributions may be made to Highland Masonic Lodge #583.
