Gertrude I. Messmer
Gertrude I. (nee Federer) Messmer, age 93, of Glen Carbon, IL., died Tuesday, July 7, 2009.
She was born January 16, 1916, in Grantfork, IL., the daughter of William and Lena (nee Bellm) Federer.
On May 20, 1939, she married Wilbur Benjamin Messmer, who passed away October 16, 1981.
She was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Marine,IL.
Born on the family farm near Grantfork, IL, and grew up there. Lived in Marine, IL, worked at the Marine Garment Factory, Marine, IL. After marriage she and her husband operated a trucking company, they also operated Messmer Seed Company, delivered bottled gas, operated a plumbing/heating/cooling company. She and her husband lived south of Marine for over 60 years, they operated a grain and livestock farm there. She took care of things while Wilbur worked at SIU-E, and the other family ventures. She enjoyed travelling, cruises and bus tours.
Survivors include Son-Kent R. (Jacque) Messmer of Collinsville, Ill., Daughter-Kay A. (Ronald) Kessinger of Edwardsville, Ill., Grandchildren-Chris A. (Lisa) Pfeifer of Bethalto, Ill., Maggie R. (Erik) Olson of Glen Carbon, Ill., Jennifer L. (Tony) King of Godfrey, Ill., McKenzie L. Messmer of Glen Carbon, Ill., Great Grandchildren-Travis L. Pfeifer, Tori E. Pfeifer, Alex K. King, Isabella Olson, Carter C. King, Olivia D. Olson and Gabriella R. Olson.
She was preceeded in death by Father-William Federer, Mother-Lena (nee Bellm) Federer, Husband-Wilbur Benjamin Messmer, Sister-Norma A. Jacober (died 11/15/2002), Brother-Wilbur F. Federer (died 01/11/1984).Service InformationArrangements are being handled by Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Marine, Ill.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday, July 9, 2009, at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Marine, IL, and from 8:00 AM to 9:30 AM Friday, July 10, 2009, at the funeral home.
Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 AM on Friday, July 10, 2009, at Saint Elizabeth Catholic Church in Marine, IL., with Rev. Monsignor Dr. Kenneth C. Steffen, Pastor, St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Marine, IL, officiating.
Interment will be at Saint Elizabeth Catholic Cemetery in Marine, Ill.
